The Washington County Relay for Life was disrupted by weather again this year, as it has been in the past 2 years.  Despite the move indoors during the evening, the event went on inside the Nashville High School north gym with entertainment and the Luminaria ceremony, honoring those survivors of cancer and remembering those who lost their battle with cancer.  During the past few weeks, purple bows and luminaria bags were sold to help the WCRFL raise funds to help find a way to beat cancer and there were 300 bows sold and approximately 412 luminaria bags sold.  Nancy Newby, one member of the committee that puts on the event, says fundraising hasn’t ended yet.  Donations for this year won’t close until the end of August.  There is another big fundraiser, sponsored by Washington County Hospital, and that is on June 11th with the 5k run at Washington County Lake, but there will also be some bake sales and things like that this summer.  Anyone can still donate individually by getting on the American Cancer Society website and type in Washington County to find out how by the end of August.  The goal is $50,000 and they are currently at $43,000, so it is possible to reach that goal.  This is their 20th year in Washington County and Newby says they have raised over $1.5 million so far.
