The summer of falling gas prices continued in the last week, with average prices statewide dropping a bit again. The average price per gallon in Illinois is $2.27, down about a penny over the last seven days. Prices have fallen steadily statewide over the last five weeks after spiking to a high of $2.62 early in June. Prices in Nashville are $2.18, which is also about a penny cheaper than last week, which is in line with the nationwide average price per gallon. A year ago, gas prices in Illinois averaged $2.84 per gallon. Analysts say that gasoline inventories remain high in the Midwest and supply has outstripped demand, even during the busiest driving season of the year. All indications are the prices will remain lower than last year as the summer begins to wind down and the autumn travel slowdown begins.
