A Jackson County Jury recently returned a guilty verdict against 22-year-old Quentin M. Bailey of Carbondale for first degree murder and robbery in relation to a shooting that happened at a hotel parking lot on the east side of Carbondale near Reed Station Road on May 10of last year. According to Jackson County State’s Attorney Michael Carr, the victim of the shooting, Broderick Miller of Marion, passed away following the initial charges. Bailey, who is already in custody on the previous charges, was remanded to the custody of the sheriff pending a sentencing hearing onOct. 27 at 1:15. Carr says the same jury acquitted Bailey of the lesser offense of possession of cannabis and armed robbery. The murder charge alleges that Bailey, while committing a forcible felony – robbery – fired a .380 caliber handgun thereby causing Miller’s death. The robbery charge alleges that Bailey took cannabis from the presence of Miller by the use of or threatened use of imminent force. He is charged with personally discharging a firearm during the robbery. Bailey faced a sentence of 20 to 60 years in prison and an extended term of 25 years to life for firing a gun that caused Miller’s death. The minimum sentence must be at least 45 years with no probation.
