Another week, another new low for area gas prices. Nashville currently has gas prices of $1.97 a gallon, down more than 20 cents in the last two weeks. Statewide prices have dropped also, but not to the degree that local prices have. Last week’s average price in Illinois were at $2.16 and now are at $2.14 per gallon. Nationwide prices have dropped around three cents per gallon in the last week, continuing the ongoing trend of tumbling prices that started in June. The fall in prices is in response to a glut in crude oil and gasoline inventories, which are up about 12 percent over last year’s totals. Prices keep dropping even in the face of drivers logging millions of miles over the summer driving season. Analysts predict that the trend of falling prices will continue in the next week, barring anything unforeseen, particularly in the area of the Great Lakes.
