The Nashville City Council met last night and authorized the purchase of activated carbon for the water treatment plant’s gravity filters at a cost of $56,400. The 40,000 pound truck load purchased from the Calgon Corporation is approximately a three-year supply for the water plant. The council also approved a bid from Metro-Ag, Incorporated for the removal of sludge from the water treatment plant’s lagoon at a cost of $31,500. The council heard from two citizens during the meeting. Opal Koch (Kuck), representing Washington County Senior Services, was on hand to request funding from the city. The council approved an $800 per month donation over the next year to the program, which was was the same amount as last year. And Heather Maschhoff, representing Angels for Autism, requested the use of city streets and police assistance for its seventh annual run to be held September 24 at the Community Center. The council approved the request. In other business, the council approved a quote from Armor Equipment to rebuild the rear compactor on its 2001 trash truck. Armor, who originally sold the city the 2001 Freightliner as well as the city’s recently purchased trash truck, was the lowest of two bidders for the rebuild at a cost of $10,216.72. The work on the truck will begin once the new truck is in service. The council approved three board reappointments. Eric Campagna was reappointed to a seven-year term on the Zoning Board of Appeals. Denny Hoffman and Carl Eubanks were both reappointed to three-year terms on the Planning Commission. Fall All Trash days were set for October 1, 5 and 8, with the recycling truck being on site on October 1. Times each day are from 8 am – 4 pm. Fall hydrant flushing within the city will be held from October 3 until October 14. The council approved a resolution in support of the construction of the Resort at Walker’s Bluff located in Carterville, which will include a multipurpose convention center and destination complex project. The resolution is to support the increased opportunities and job creation for area residents and the increased economic development for the region. The council set trick or treating in the city for Saturday, October 29 from 5 pm – 8:30 pm.
