The State of Illinois is honoring a soldier from Illinois who was killed in Afghanistan. All U.S. and state flags in Illinois will be lowered to half-staff from Saturday to Monday to remember Army sergeant Doug Riney. The Fairview native died last week from wounds received during an encounter with “hostile enemy forces” in Kabul. He was a decorated soldier, having been awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, four Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and NATO Medal. Riney had previously deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from July 2014 to February 2015, and again from June 2016 to October in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.
