A village trustee in the village of Smithton is remaining mum about whether he’ll resign after being charged with threatening family members with a gun on Labor Day. A grand jury indicted 52-year-old Darren Vehlewald for allegedly intimidating members of his family with an unlicensed gun during an argument with his estranged wife. Smithton Mayor Raymond Klein says he doesn’t have the power to remove Vehlewald from his post as trustee or head of the police committee. Vehlewald, who also serves as chairman of the villages’s police committee, won’t say if he’ll step down.
