An accident involving three semis resulted in the closing of lanes of Interstate 57 in Jefferson County Tuesday morning. According to the report from the Illinois State Police, Jeremy Pieper of Girard was driving a 2014 Kenworth truck northbound on Interstate 57 near Mile Marker 95 when he experienced a medical issue that caused him to lose control of his vehicle. The semi traveled off of the roadway onto the right grass shoulder, crossed back through all three north bound lanes, entered the median, and entered into the south bound lanes. At that point, a Freightliner truck driven by Bret Harness, of Frankfort, Indiana, struck the right side of the Kenworth near the drive axles, and a Mack semi driven by Robert Baker of Camby, Indiana, was struck near the rear of its second trailer by the Kenworth. The damage to the Kenworth and Freightliner was extensive and both vehicle had to be removed from the scene by tow, while the damage to the Mack was much less extensive, but still required removal by tow. One south bound lane of the interstate remained open throughout this incident and all south bound lanes were reopened at approximately 12:30 p.m. Pieper was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries and was charged with Driving While Ill or Fatigued due to the pre-existing medical condition. Harness and Baker were uninjured in the incident.
