The West Washington County School District met for their monthly board meeting last Thursday. To start off, they had to organize and seat the new board members. That included Daryl Frederking, Kurt Heckert, Neal Hackstadt and Gregory Toensing. Ron Recker was elected as president; Kurt Heckert will be vice-president and Daryl Frederking will serve as the secretary. After a short discussion, the board will keep the time and location for the monthly meeting at the High School Conference Room at 8pm. Melissa Leadendecker was reappointed as the School district Treasurer for the same price as last year. Okawville will also see their outside lighting changed up to LED and that money is going to be used from the Ameren Lighting Grant. Most of the lighting outside will be paid for through the grant, which is ¾ of the bill. In total, it will cost $28,000 and the grant will go for $21,000. The 1st reading of the Student Proposed Handbook changes for 2017-18 was done, which went very well. Next month will see the 2nd reading from the handbook. The amended budget hearing has been set for next year in June. A new teacher was hired during the meeting as well. Kendra Henderson will be teaching 6th grade next year. The non-certified teacher’s for next year also got a wage increase by 2.2 percent. During the March meeting, Two men and a Mower won the bid for mowing season for 2017, but elected to decline the service. With that decline, the board had to find somebody else to do the service. The second bid, Quality Turf, was then accepted and is now in charge of mowing for the 2017 season at the schools. In the Superintendent’s report, two items were listed on the agenda. That included the State Update and end of the year events in the district. The Junior High has their graduation set for May 17th and the High School will be Sunday, May 21st at 2pm. The next board meeting is set for May 25th.
