The state of Illinois is going to be receiving just over 1.2-million-dollars from Target Corporation from a probe in the store’s pre-Christmas date breach in 2013. The company has agreed on a settlement with multiple states for 18.5-million dollars. Illinois received a little over 1.2-million of that 18.5 million, which is roughly 6.5 percent of that money. The breech occurred between November 27th and December 15th of 2013, where over 60-million customer contact information and 41-million customer payment card accounts were hacked and exposed. Target did offer free credit reports for people who potentially were affected and they were forced to overhaul the security system. Attorney General for Illinois Lisa Madigan stated on Tuesday that the settlement, which affected 47 states, is going to establish industry standards for companies. They will be more aware of payment card processing and maintain a reliable security system to keep customer information a secret. Madigan also wants to make sure that citizens remain active and to look at their statements for credit and debit cards to avoid fraud.
