2. A Saturday night fire in Centralia is currently under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, after a home was completely destroyed. The home, at 521 South Sycamore Street, was on fire, with fire and smoke seen from the rear of the home and quickly spread through the structure. 1st responders arrived at 820pm on Saturday and were there fighting the blaze until 3am Sunday. The home occupants, Keith Gregg, Johanna Gregg and Katy Hoffman, all escaped the home safely. The family dog and 6 puppies did not escape in time, and were killed from the fire. All available city firefighters were brought in to help with the battle, with police assisting with crowd control, dragging the hose, hydrant connections and traffic control. The heat from the fire also caused damage to the siding, windows and the fence of a neighboring home on South Sycamore. Only the walls remain from the location on the front part of the home. The loss of the building and its contents at an estimated $28,000. The home is owned by Terry Alvis of Walnut Hill.
