The Nashville Community High School District 99 Board of Education met for their monthly meeting last night. Two board members were not at the meeting, but they had enough for a quorum to do regular business. Under the superintendent’s report, Ernie Fowler had multiple items to address to the board. He spoke that a team meeting was held with high school staff on July 11th, which Michelle Goosetree felt was positive. The school will be having a new mission statement in regard to their B-E-S-T or BEST. Staff will be giving their input during these meeting to make sure that the administration and the staff are on the same page. There will also be an increase of department meeting with Fowler this upcoming school year. In the past, they would meet one time a year. This school year, they will be meeting 3 to 4 times with Superintendent Fowler to give updates and concerns with their departments. The high school is also in the process of hosting a Solar Eclipse Party on August 21st. Students will be able to go outside and witness the eclipse, with the school combining both lunches. Protective glasses and bag lunches are also going to be provided. Fowler spoke with Mr. Brown and hopes that’s music can be provided by the band during the event. Possible activities are still pending, but board members believe that this could be a great learning experience for students. A grant was accepted for $3,000 for a new fume head for the Science Department by the USDA. The fume head was picked up and is now being installed by NCHS staff, with some help from J&R Appliances. 3 Nashville teachers were thanked for their help in the application process of obtaining this grant. Mr. Fowler also spoke during his report that the high school now has a Facebook Page. This will allow NCHS to send out information quicker to the public. Under old business, there was an update for the Little Hornet Football and high school football field use. The board will allow Little Hornet Football on a plan for the upcoming season. They will be allowed to host 3 games per day per week. The only exception is that if bad weather is in the forecast or the field is damaged too much from a Friday night game, they will need to reschedule their contest. The school is also hoping that the new bluegrass will be installed 2 weeks before the 1st game. Under new business, Stephanie Bouza was approved to be reappointed as the IMRF Authorized Agent, which needs to be done every year. Meier’s Chevrolet was accepted as the Driver’s Education automobile contract for next year, who had the bid last year. They will have the same cost as last year. The Athletic admission prices for the 2018 fiscal year will not change. At 623pm, the board went into closed session. After an hour, they returned to open session and announced that Jenny Olsen is the new Lifesaver co-sponsor. The meeting adjourned at 732. The next board meeting will be on August 21st at 6pm.
