Illinois school superintendents met on Tuesday with Governor Bruce Rauner to help pressure him to sign Senate Bill 1, which would officially change the funding formula for school districts. With the school year set to begin here in the next few weeks, superintendents from around the state are worried that classes might not be able to start on time, unless the governor signs the bill. The legislation wants to change the funding formula to an evidence-based system, which will mean lower-income districts will no longer be short-changed just because they don’t have a strong property base. Rauner has announced that he will not sign the bill, unless money is moved from Chicago public schools to other districts throughout the state. He claimed that this bill is nothing more than a pension bailout for Chicago schools. Superintendents across Illinois, including dozens of teachers, students and parents all gathered at Brighton North Elementary School to help show their strong support for SB 1. Multiple superintendents have said the state already owes them money from previous years, which has resulted in programs and person cuts, along with job lost.
