Illinois State Police announced yesterday that they will be participating in the 2017 Illinois Speed Awareness Campaign. This Illinois Speed Awareness Day will be on Wednesday, July 26th this week. During that day, ISP Officers will be taking a proactive approach to help promote safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists through education and enforcement. In 2015 for Illinois, speeding was the fault for 34% of all traffic fatalities. That equals to 369 deaths a year or one life lost every 23.7 hours. Also the probability of death in a crash doubles every time you travel 10 miles-per-hour over 50. 37% of speed-related crashed results in injuries, speeding extends the distance required to stop for a vehicle in emergency situations, speeding reduces the driver’s ability to navigate safely around curves and objects in the roadway, traveling highway speeds can lower gas mileage by 33% and the effectiveness of restraint devices like airbags, safety belts, crumple zones and side beams decline as impact speed increases.
