A high-speed chase early on Sunday morning leads to the arrest of a suspect, who crashed his vehicle into a ditch along Illinois Route 161, while attempting to turn on down Schwartz Road. 32-year-old Duston McCowen of Mt. Vernon was taken into custody immediately following the crash. He was then charged for aggravated fleeing police, unlawful use of a weapon, illegal possession of a weapon by a felon and driving while having a suspended license. According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was attempting to stop McCowen over at around 140am on Sunday, along Bundyville Road, but instead he fled the stop and began a pursuit, which continued on Route 161. The vehicle he was driving was going up to 100 miles-per-hour. McCowen then reportedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a ditch, when it appeared that he was attempting to turn onto Schwartz Road. McCowen and his female passenger were both released out of the vehicle and suffered no injuries. Deputies also reportedly located a shotgun, which was sawed-off, and had a dog taken into custody. The dog was taken by Animal Control. McCowen was then taken to the Marion County Jail, where he will remain while he awaits formal filing charges and for his bail to be set.
