The Cook County Board President cited that there is a racial disparity in enforcement of laws against the use of marijuana, as the reason that she now favors the legalization of the drug. The Board President of Cook County made her assertion during a public hearing on Monday in Chicago, about the legalization of recreational marijuana in Illinois. Democratic Senators in Chicago has already proposed a legislation that would legalize the possession of up to 28 grams of marijuana and allow facilities to sell marijuana products. During her testimony, she noted that her daughter visited a friend at Northwestern University and came back with a store of students smoking marijuana in a public place and no one objecting. Lawmakers are also hearing from opponents, including doctors who deal with addiction and members of a religious community. Many of those who oppose state that legalization will have a negative impact on the state.
