Identity theft was voted as the top complaint by consumers, inside the Illinois Attorney General’s office last year. Attorney General Lisa Madigan released her annual list on Monday. Identity theft was ranked number 1 for the 1st time since 2007, with over 2,500 complaints. Madigan’s office stated that the jump in last year’s number was a large part of the Equifax data breach. In total, roughly 147.9-million Americans were impacted by Equifax’s data breach, which remains the largest data breach of citizen personal information ever. In number 2 was education-related complaints, which included student loan debt, loan counseling and for-profit schools. Other complaint topics included consumer debt, construction and home improvement, telecommunications and vehicle sales. The attorney general’s office received nearly 24,700 complaints in 2017.
