Nashville Community High School and their Board of Education met for a regular monthly meeting last night. Under the treasurer’s report, it was announced that the district received just over $146,000 in tax money, with the district receiving their 1st payment from the transportation fund from the state. Normally the district would receive 4 payments a fiscal year, but this is the 1st one this year. Kaskaskia College Interim President George Evans came in front of the board and spoke about his goals within the district. KC has 17 high schools that represent their district. He wanted to speak with the board about duel credit for the upcoming year and for the future. He wanted to reiterate that KC does not represent high school curriculum at the schools, since schools have the authority to determine whether or not the student would receive high school credit for the courses. Evans also stated that the student would only be responsible for books from the class. KC would allow the student no tuition fee or any other type of cost. Under the principal’s report, Mr. Begando had a couple of announcements. He announced that attendance in February was up to 95-percent, with discipline up slightly. He also stated that instead of participating in the walkout on March 14th, students and faculty instead held an assembly. The assembly according to Begando was a huge success with lots of student activity. The Pop music class will also hold a Pop Palooza Concert on May 19th, in order for the music department to raise money for the upcoming Sugar Bowl performance in New Orleans next year. There was also a discussion about purchasing a possible video board for Assembly Hall. The contract would be for 5 years with the company, with no cost to the school for the 1st 5 years and the district only having to pay for installation. That item was tabled to next month’s meeting. Under new business, multiple items were approved. That included a renewal of the IHSA membership for the 2018-2019 school year, an amendment to the 2017-2018 school calendar and an authorization to pay $170,000 from the Tort Fund to the Working Cash. The Superintendent was also approved to establish a start date for the collective bargaining sessions with the Nashville Education Association, which has a contract ending on August 10th. The district mower, which is 2-years old and has over 530 hours of usage, will be traded into Diedrich’s for an updated mower. A new floor vacuum machine was also approved under new business, which will be no more than $550. The board also approved re-seeding and turf repair to the NCHS football field, which will install Bermuda grass for $7,300. There was also an addition to the proposal, where a detailed schedule must be presented on all work done on the field. The annual ROE Inspection repairs, which was discussed in the February meeting, was approved for $28,000 on multiple maintenance projects. Nick Wolf was approved to become a new volunteer football coach, pending a required background check and orientation training. Mr. Hawkins also wanted to announce that as of right now, Graduation is set for Sunday, May 27th at 2pm at the high school. The next board meeting for Nashville Community High School is set for Monday, April 16th.
