After almost 7 years, the last 4 people involved with a May 2011 botched robbery and murder of a 75-year-old Mt. Vernon cab driver were sentenced. Mark Taylor Jr. was sentenced on Friday, to 45-years at the Illinois Department of Corrections. 30 of those 45 years were for 1st-degree murder and an additional 15 year added for using a firearm in the crime. After about 3 years of deliberation, a Jefferson County jury found Taylor guilty last November, to 1st-degree murder, with the additional firearm guilty plea. Taylor was the last of 4 individuals, who were charged and convicted in the May 2011 botched robbery and death of 75-year-old cab driver Charles Ellis. Ellis was working in Mt. Vernon as a cab driver at the time. The other 3 defendants in the case included Christopher Wells, who got 26 years in the case, Damondros James, currently serving 50 years in jail, and Demandre Black, who got booked for 20 years. The son of the victim, Bobby Ellis, delivered a victim’s impact statement prior to the sentencing being handed down. The court did find that Taylor’s history of criminal behavior prior to the murder and that Ellis was over 60-years-old as aggravating factors in the sentencing. The court also took into account that Taylor has an intellectual disability, which ultimately lightened his sentence. Taylor will remain at the Jefferson County Jail, until he can be transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections. He has been in police custody since his arrested in May 2011.
