The city of Aurora is the latest municipality in Illinois to raise their tobacco purchase age to 21. Reports indicate that the City Council voted earlier this week unanimously to raise the age. This comes after months of research by city staff. The ordinance includes vaping materials as well. 18 other municipalities also require patrons to be 21-years-old or older in order to purchase tobacco or vaping-related products. Other cities include Chicago, Evanston, Naperville and Bolingbrook. Their mayor stated that the Aurora City Council has, “once again made the health and future of our children the top priority in our area.” Officials became involved in this issue, since hearing about how tobacco and vaping issues were growing at Illinois schools. State law prevents anyone 17-years-old or younger from purchasing tobacco products.
