The sponsor of the proposal that would ban Illinois children younger than 12-years-old from playing tackle football tells The Associated Press that her measure lacks votes and support at this time to potentially pass in this session. Democratic Representative Carol Sente (sen-tay) of Vernon Hills says that the House floor would fall short on the measure. She says that next session, she will focus on education people about the dangers of repeated hits to the youth brain. Research suggests that there is a link between recurring blows and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is a dementia-like, degenerative disease, which is characterized by memory loss, violent urges, depression and more. Several prominent ex-football players, who have committed suicide, had brains showing signs of CTE. Sente’s (sen-tay’s) legislation is meant to delay the trauma, until after the children’s brains are better developed. Opponents of the measure say that there are safe tackling techniques and that a complete ban for children under 12 is an overreach.
