The Annual Washington County Relay for Life is set for Friday, May 11th from 5 to 11pm at the Okawville Community Club. All proceeds for the relay teams and donations will go towards cancer research. Starting next week, Washington County will be painting the community in purple for the event. The relay will begin with an opening ceremony, with survivors gathering to make their inaugural lap around the track, with another lap dedicated to caregivers to recognize the men and women who tirelessly gave quality support to loved ones who have been diagnosed with cancer. Several groups will have tables set up and selling a variety of food at the event. According to the American Cancer Society, there has been an estimated 1.7-million new cancer cases diagnosed, with over 609,000 deaths from cancer in 2018 in the US. The fundraising goal this year is at $27,000 for our area.
