A Senate sponsor for a measure requiring state licensing of gun dealers says that he will not call for a veto override vote, unless he is sure that it will pass in the House. Democratic Senator Don Harmon, of Oak Park, stated on Wednesday that he has the 36 votes required for an override of Republican Governor Bruce Rauner’s veto on the plan, but he is unsure if the House will get enough votes for the override. The measure would require firearm shops to pay $1,000 for a 5-year license, plus train their employees to spot illegal gun purchasers. Harmon said that he promised some of his colleagues that he would not try for an override vote, unless he can assure them that the House would reverse the veto too. A House Sponsor acknowledged to Harmon that he would be short on the vote. Harmon stated that House members are reluctant to commit, until they know the that the Senate will act.
