The Illinois State Police Department is urging motorists to drive cautiously, while Illinois roadways will be used for spring planting season. Farmers will begin to move their equipment from field to field and travel at speeds of 25-miles-per-hour or lower during this time. Be sure to reduce your speed immediately if you encounter a slow-moving vehicle. Other farm and safety traffic tips include avoiding distractions while driving, including texting, talking on a hand-held phone or using an mp3 device, and not attempting to pass farm equipment unless it is both legal and safe to do so. Make sure that you wait until the opposite lane is open and don’t trust the equipment operator to wave you on. You must maintain a safe distance and be patient for the lane to open up. You must also be prepared to meet an oncoming oversized agricultural vehicle. Another tip is being prepared for the equipment driver to be turning in either direction, along with keeping your eyes on the road the entire time. Motorists are asked to avoid driving at sunrise or sunset, since your visibility will be limited. The last tip that ISP offers is ensuring that slow moving vehicles emblems are mounted on the rear of the farm machine, so that citizens know that a slow-moving vehicle is in front of them.
