Several communities in the area were awarded the Community Development Block Housing Grant, which went to 14 projects in the state. The total amount of funds awarded totaled about $6-million. Governor Bruce Rauner made the announcement on Thursday, along with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Officials report that low-to-moderate income communities can apply for the housing grants, in order to help improve and rehabilitate properties. Herrin and Vergennes was awarded $500,000, West Frankfort and Zeigler got $450,000, with Williamson County and Colp $368,550.
