Under the direction of House Speaker Michael Madigan, his chief of staff has resigned, after being accused of mishandling allegations of sexual harassment and making inappropriate comments. Sherri Garrett stated on Wednesday that Madigan’s chief of staff, Timothy Mapes, was dismissive of harassment complaints on 2 separate occasions, along with making untoward comments to Garrett and a few others individuals from 2013 until just a few weeks ago. Mapes makes $208,000, compared to Garrett making $42,000 as an accountant technician for the House. Garrett says that she complained about sexual harassment back in 2013 and in 2015, involving a 2nd lawmakers, when Mapes asked if she was upset that she was not the object of his attention. Garrett also says that Mapes made an inappropriate sexual comment to her at least twice. Madigan says that his office and the House Democratic Ethics Officer, were unaware of these complaints against Mapes. Madigan has since named Jessica Basham as his new Chief of Staff effective immediately. Mapes had also resigned as the Executive Director of the Democratic Party in Illinois and all other roles that he did inside of Madigan’s committees.
