Three women from the Democratic House are calling for an independent investigation against House Speaker Michael Madigan’s office. The announcement on Thursday comes a day after an employee accused Madigan’s chief of staff of making lewd comments and mishandling complaints against sexual harassment. Tim Mapes has since resigned, making him the 2nd top Democratic leader forced out in less than a week. Madigan said that he would appoint an investigator to review all House operations back on Wednesday. Representatives Kelly Burke of Oak Lawn, Ann Williams of Chicago and Deb Conroy of Villa Park say that the investigation should be done by a private, independent agency, instead of in-house. The representatives are park of the newly-formed House Democratic Women’s Caucus. They say that the allegations show the, “culture surrounding Illinois government and politics, which must change.” A Madigan spokesman stated that he could not comment, since he had not seen the lawmakers’ statement yet.
