Officials from an Illinois county have ended a coroner’s practice of holding remains of poor people, until relatives can come up with $1,000. According to the Associated Press, last month, Coroner James Keller was having people who could not afford to bury loved ones to sign over the rights of the deceased, leaving them without a death certificate. He would have the body cremated and bury the ashes if the relatives could not afford to pay. Keller said that the policy was necessary, since Illinois halted or delayed payments for unaffordable burials, due to the state’s budget crisis. The Adams County Board approved a new policy on Tuesday, that will not require the family to pay the $1,000 charge. Expenses will be submitted to the state, which has resumed paying for the burials. Death certificates will also not be withheld as well.
