The Southern Illinois Board of Trustees approved a separation agreement on Monday to end Randy Dunn’s contract as the school’s president. After voting unanimously for the deal, the board approved to hire J. Kevin Dorsey as the interim president. Dorsey was the former dean of the SIU School of Medicine. With this separation agreement, Dunn will be provided a 6-month severance payment of $215,000, with his tenure ending on July 30th. He will then be rehired as a visiting professor at SIU Edwardsville, with an annual salary of $100,000, starting on January 1st, 2019. Dunn has been the president at SIU since 2014. The board originally offered no compensation, under the assumption that there was just cause to fire Dunn, but Dunn’s attorney responded to the offer to seek an amount that was, “substantially higher than what was finally agreed to.” Dunn was the target of criticism over his handling of a proposal to shift $5.1-million in state funding from the schools Carbondale campus to the campus in Edwardsville. He also faced calls for his resignation after an email became public of him using a slur to refer to critics of the reallocation. One of the trustees also said that there will a search committee and likely a consulting firm hired to fill the permanent president position at SIU.
