The Illinois State Police Department announces that they will have the Illinois Speed Awareness Day throughout today. Police will be taking a proactive approach in order to promote safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, through enforcement and education. In 2016, the total number of crashes in Illinois, involving motor vehicles, was at 324,274. These crashes resulted in 92,957 injuries and 1,078 deaths. Speed accounted for 32.2-percent of those overall crashes, along with 34.2-percent of all fatal traffic crashes in Illinois. The probability of death or having a serious injury grows higher by how fast you go. For example, such consequences double for every 10 miles-per-hour you go over 50-mph’s. State Police Officers also note that lives can be easily saved by being aware of your speed an understanding how speeding impacts a crash.
