A woman from Eldorado pleads guilty on Thursday, after the US District Court charges her for engaging in a scheme to steal money from a federal health care program. According to court records, 45-year-old Betsy Gutowski’s bond was revoked and remains in jail, while she waits for her sentencing on November 15th. Gutowski faces a maximum sentence of 10-years and a $250,000 fine. During her plea hearing, she admitted to submitting false and fraudulent bills for personal assistant services, in the Home Services Program, which is a Medicaid waiver program designed to allow individuals to stay at a home, instead of entering a nursing home. She admitted to falsely billing the program between December 1st, 2011 and October 15th, 2012, when she purposely filed a person assistant service to a customer, who was in a hospital or nursing home at the time. In total, she improperly billed 349 hours of service, resulting in $4,036.73 in payments for services that were not performed. The prosecution is part of the “Operation Home Alone” initiative. They also wanted to announce that if you know or suspect someone or a company that is not complying with healthcare laws or public aid programs, you can report the activity to the local office of the US Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of the Inspector General or call 1-800-447-84-77.
