The Washington County Board met for a regular monthly meeting last night. At that meeting, it was announced that the highway department has 18 projects that they will attempt to complete before the end of the year. Two resolutions to replace a culvert in Venedy were approved. They will both be 50/50 projects, with the Wild Turkey Road culvert replacement costing $6,705 in total, and the culvert replacement of County Highway 12 at $8,210. A resolution was also approved for the 2018 County Motor Fuel Tax Funds. The Highway Department will add an additional $22,000 to their annual spending, since they switched stone materials that cost a little more, but are better quality. The total spending for the Highway Department is at $656,750. The County Clerk’s Office wanted to announce that taxes in Washington County were finished on July 27th, with an ordinance approved for predictable fee schedule for the office having an increase of $3. Background Checks and finger printing for new employees inside the sheriff’s office was approved. They already have an inkless scanning machine to conduct the fingerprint check and a program online to send in background checks. This will only be required for new employees. Also a permit for door to door sales in Washington County was tabled for another meeting, which would require a fee for citizens to sell items door to door. This would exclude high school and grade schoolers who are selling for their schools or not for profit. Also during the annual report from the zoning committee, it was announced that building permits in 2018 were at 28, down from 39 in 2017. Special use permits were at 6, up from 4 at this time in 2017, and variances were at 3, down from 4 last year. The board did approve a contract with Consolation Energy, which proposed from the building committee. The next board meeting for Washington County will be at 7pm on Tuesday, September 11th.
