The Illinois State Police Department would like to remind motorists that area schools are now back in session, with the new school year starting. With that, the increase of pedestrian and vehicular traffic around schools will increase. Motorists need to be aware of children walking and riding their bikes to and from school, as well as children darting out between parked cars. School buses will be stopping more frequently to pick up and drop off children. Residents should also plan ahead to allow the increased traffic to their morning and evening commute. School zones have a speed limit of 20 miles-per-hour, effective from 7am to 4pm. You must also be completely stopped if a school bus has its lights activated and a sign extended, since they are picking up or dropping off students. Failure to do so could result in a $150 fine and a suspension of your license for up to 3 months. Also ISP wanted to announce that pedestrians have the right-of-way while entering a crosswalk.
