The city of Carbondale will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, September 25th, in order to present their plans and receive public comments on their Oakland Avenue Reconstruction Project. The project is going to be partially funded through a grant from the Southern Illinois Metropolitan Planning Organization or SIM-PO. Improvements to rebuild Oakland Avenue, from Chautauqua Street to Walnut Street, will include new concrete pavement, with dedicated bicycle lanes, new sidewalks, driveway aprons and updated storm sewers. In order to accommodate dedicated bicycle lanes in each direction, the existing on-street parking, just south of Mill Street, will be removed. Plans will be on display in Room 103 at the Carbondale Civic Center from 430 to 6pm. Citizens are invited to view the plans and provide comments to the city’s project. Officials will be at the open house to explain the project and answer any questions. Construction is scheduled to begin during the fall of 2019.
