A Mt. Vernon man was sentenced on Monday to 70 years in prison, after pleading guilty to a January 2017 shooting death and botched robbery to DeAndrey Jackson, at a Mt. Vernon bowling alley. 22-year-old John Wells was found guilty of 1st-degree murder, where he fired 13 rounds at Jackson, while he was attempting to get away from a botched robbery along 18th Street and Conger Street. Wells was indicated in the case, along with 7 other individuals, including Curtis Devan Jr., Dantrez Brown, Deon Frazier, Jarron Liddell, Lamar Williams Jr., Tony Feggins, and Lekedrion Russell. Russell, Devan and Frazier all plead guilty to lesser charges, in exchange for testifying against the other co-defendants. Brown and Liddell also entered into guilty plea agreements, which required them to testify against Wells. They had their charges of murder and robbery dismissed, as per that agreement. Additional law enforcement was brought in on Monday, in order to maintain the peace at the courthouse. Apparently, there were numerous members of both the victim’s and the defendant’s families present during the trail. A defense request to reconsider the sentence was denied, and a notice of intent to appeal was filed. Wells must serve 100-percent of that 70-year sentence.
