Cell phone companies would like to announce that you should receive a message stating that there is a Presidential Alert from the president. The message was scheduled to be delivered today, but it is now postponed to October 3rd, since emergency management officials are busy with Hurricane Florence on the southeast coast of the country. Officials say that when the day comes, the public should be aware that the message is only a test of a national alert system. The test message will have a header saying Presidential Alert, with the message saying, “This is a test, in all caps, from the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” If you receive this message, or if you do not, there is no need to contact local authorities. According to the agency, a presidential alert is one of 3 types of alerts in the FEMA WEA system, which also notified the public about 3extreme weather in the area or missing area children, also known as AMBER alerts. The WEA test will also be broadcasted over the course of about 30 minutes, with the same sound as an AMBER Alert. Users cannot opt out of the presidential alert test, according to FEMA, with over 100 carriers participating in the emergency alert test. That includes the largest carriers, such as Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile all participating. FEMA will also run a test of its Emergency Alert System or an EAS test for radio and television broadcasters that same day, starting 3 minutes after the WEA test.
