Autopsy results from a construction worker who was found dead on Thursday at Centralia Junior High confirms electrocution as the cause of death. A preliminary autopsy says that 32-year-old Matt Smith, of Tilden, is consistent with the high amperage electrocution. The autopsy was completed on Friday in Champaign and according to the coroner, all other causes for Smith’s death were disregarded. The toxicology testing is likely to be closed as an accidental electrocution. As an ironworker, Smith was using a welder before his supervisor found him passed out and unresponsive on Thursday afternoon, while on a scissor lift. The supervisor had left 4 to 5 minutes earlier to get a drink of water and no one else was in the area. Efforts to revive Smith on the scene were unsuccessful, and he was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. Since this was a workplace incident, OSHA officials were notified and investigated. Smith was working to put up the skeleton for an addition to the junior high, along the Pine Street side of the school.
