One accident was reported in Washington County on Wednesday morning, at around 640am. ISP officers responded to the 2-vehicle crash, which did cause an injury, along Interstate 64, at mile marker 57 and a ½. 41-year-old Peter Gurdon of Florida was traveling eastbound on I-64, when he drove off of the roadway and onto the right shoulder, eventually striking the rear of the trailer being pulled by 51-year-old Kevin Shaw, of Marion. Gurdon suffered major injuries from the accident and had to be flown to a regional hospital, after being extracted from his Volvo. Shaw suffered minor injuries and them treated at a local hospital. Both vehicles suffered major damage from the accident. I-64 was reduced to one lane for over 10 hours, so that an investigation could be conducted and so the scene could be cleaned up. Gurdon was cited for improper lane usage.
Another accident was reported along Interstate 64, this time on Thursday afternoon, which included injuries. 2 vehicles were involved, including 32-year-old Joshua Bourque of Centralia and 49-year-old James Lumpkins of Bluford. Preliminary investigation details state that Bourque was traveling eastbound on the exit ramp of I-64, with Lumpkins traveling on US 51. Bourque was stopped at the stop sign, at the bottom of the ramp, and proceeded into the path of Lumpkins, with the driver failing to notice incoming traffic. Bourque struck the side of Lumpkins’ vehicle, near the front end, causing major dmage to both vehicles. Lumpkins suffered incapacitating injuries from the accident and had to be transported to an area hospital. One lane of US 51 south remained open throughout the cleanup. Bourque ended up getting cited for Failure to Yield at a stopped intersection.
