A new memorial will honor the lives of Illinois State Police Officers, who died while in the line of duty. The Illinois State Police Memorial Park in Springfield will include a wall etched with the names of the 67 troopers, located near the state Capitol in Springfield. State Police Director Leo Schmitz stated, “We owe each of these men and women a huge debt of gratitude, as well as some else, that we never forget them.” Sergeant Erin Hehl was killed when a helicopter she was in crashed back in 1997 during a training exercise. Erin’s husband Bob Hehl called the park a lasting monument that can dedicate the trooper’s lives and leave a lasting impression on their service. The Illinois State Police Heritage Foundation raised about $2.5-million in order to pay for the project.
