After only a day of evidence and testimonies last week, the court agrees to continue the bench trial for a couple in Jefferson County. 19-year-old Tyrone Steele and 21-year-old Abigail Adkins of a 2017 battery to an infant and causing a permanent disability. The pair were arrested in April of 2017, where they were charged with a Class X felony. They both remained at the Jefferson County Jail since their arrest, with bail set at $250,000 each. Until recently, the two were co-defendants and were going to be tried together in the bench trial. Proceedings were then halted after the 1st day of testimonies, which included a testimony from a St. Louis physician, who specializes in the assessment of the suspected child abuse. Steele requested that the case be severed and that he and Adkins be tried separately. It was agreed that Steele be tried, starting October 11 and Adkins starting on October 15th. The proceedings on Steele would be continued until October 19th. Prosecution witnesses testified on Thursday, which included Steele’s former co-defendant Adkins.
