The Illinois Department of Transportation has begun their statewide initiative among multiple government agencies, in order to develop a testing program for connected and autonomous vehicles. Governor Bruce Rauner signed an executive order last week, directing IDOT to develop a program called, “Autonomous Illinois”, in order to stay ahead in research on the emerging safety technology. The order will require IDOT to supervise the program, which requires that an automated car have a driver at the steering wheel and be able to take control if necessary. Connected cars are those that are equipped with internet or wireless networks, capable of sharing information to benefit a driver. Autonomous Illinois will then recruit communities that want to test out the tech with local industry, universities or other organizations. Private organizations will then assist in planning infrastructure, date and support needed for the testing.
