The 5th and final defendant that was charged with an Illinois tax-fraud scheme has been sentenced to over 8-years in prison. A statement from the US attorney’s office in Springfield says that 44-year-old Clifton “Ty” Robinson was sentenced to fraud and aggregated identity theft convictions. Prosecutors say that Robinson, who is a resident of Chicago, was the leader of the scheme and claimed over $1.8-million in refunds from false tax returns. Robinson and his 4 co-conspirators were also ordered to pay $1.2-million in restitution to the IRS for 100s of false income tax returns between 2012 and 2014. Robinson was convicted in May during a bench trial, and was finally sentenced last week, with the judge describing Robinson as the scheme’s leader. The other defendants received smaller sentenced between a year and 26 months.
