A brief search on Tuesday afternoon, by Mt. Vernon Police and their K-9 unit, resulted in the arrest of a Mt. Vernon teenager, who fled on foot from a security guard at the Kroger’s grocery store. According to police, 18-year-old Darius Swahn was taken into custody, after he was located in a wooded area south of Newell Funeral Home. Officers began their search at around 252pm on Tuesday, after they received a report of a shoplifter who fled from the scene. The Kroger is located along the 400 block of 42nd Street in Mt. Vernon. A citizen reported that they saw the suspect flee into a wooded area south of the funeral home, and that he was possibly armed. Officers established a perimeter around the area, with the K-9 unit and a Jefferson County Deputy searching inside. Swahn was eventually located and taken into custody. It was later determined that the teen had a parole violation warrant from the Illinois Department of Corrections. He was then charged with the retail theft and the parole violation. He was then taken to the Jefferson County Jail, where he is being held without bond. He eventually will be returned into the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections.
