A winner was officially declared this past week, where a sheriff won by a single vote. The Macon County clerk’s office stated that the final results of their county sheriff’s race was 19,655 votes for Democrat Tony Brown and 19,654 votes to Republican Jim Root. Preliminary results on Election Night had Root with a 99 vote lead, but after mail-in votes came in, it favored Brown. Brown and Root are both lieutenants inside the sheriff’s department, which includes the city of Decatur. They were seeking to replace Howard Buffett, son of the billionaire investor Warren Buffett, who became the interim sheriff last year, after the previous sheriff retired. Brown says that this is further proof that every single vote counts. Root has not decided yet whether he will seek a recount from the county.
