Kaskaskia College and their Board of Trustees met this past Monday night for a regular monthly meeting. Trustees approved the employment of Jeff Brown of Greenville, who will now be the college’s new Director of Public Safety. Since the college has grown in both size and enrollment, the need for a more enhanced and visible security department was needed. In recent months, the college has discussed establishing a sworn police presence, in order to help oversee security operations on the college’s main campus and at their education centers. Brown has over 32 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, including 23 years as Sheriff in Bond County. In other personnel action on Monday, trustees hired Johnny Matthews of Greenville, as the college’s new Chief Information Officer. Also Earl Dwayne Hunter of Odin was hired as a full-time Maintenance Specialist for the college. A resolution to establish tuition and fee rates for the college’s Fiscal Year 2020 was approved. The fees will remain the same, but tuition will increase by 2-percent. The increase will officially go into effect during the summer 2019 semester. In other action, the board approved a resolution to abate property taxes for a proposed enterprise zone, planned by the city of Salem and Marion County. Also approved was insurance coverage, offered by Kane Insurance Agency of Salem, through Wright Specialty Insurance and Hastings Mutual Insurance Company. The coverage is similar to last years, but at a reduced cost to the institution. The college will be having their Holiday Choir concert on Thursday, November 29th and a Holiday Instrumental Concert on Tuesday, December 4th.
