A couple from Mt. Vernon each were sentenced to 20-years in prison, in regard to abusing their child.  20-year-old Tyrone Steele and 22-year-old Abagail Adkins, both of Mt. Vernon, were sentenced in Jefferson County Court to 20-years, after being convicted to a Class X felony of aggravated battery to a child.  The investigation started back on April 2017, after the Mt. Vernon Police Department received a call from a nurse at Cardinal Glennon hospital in St. Louis, where an infant had serious injuries.  Steele and Adkins were then taken into custody 2 weeks later and charged with the assault.  Court records show that Steele was the one who assaulted the child, and Adkins was charged because she was aware of the abuse and did not attempt to stop it or report it.  Both must serve at least 85-percent of their 20-year sentences.
