MOUNT VERNON — An early morning rollover crash injured six people and claimed the life of a juvenile Tuesday on Interstate 57 south of Mt. Vernon.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash occurred just after 5 a.m. when the driver lost control of the southbound vehicle that left the roadway near the 89-mile marker and rolled over.

The Jefferson County Coroner pronounced a juvenile passenger dead on the scene. The six other occupants in the vehicle were transported to local area hospitals with injuries.

According to Jefferson Fire, they had to remove a door to help get the driver out of the vehicle, but three of the passengers were walking around the crash scene when they arrived while three others sustained serious injuries.

Both southbound lanes of I-57 were shut down between 7:28 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. due to the fatal crash.
