FAYETTE COUNTY — A frightening story out of Fayette County over the weekend. Illinois State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting stemming from a burglary to a Brownstown home that was interrupted by the homeowner.

According to ISP, officers were dispatched around 7 p.m. Saturday to a call of a burglary in progress with shots fired. Tyler J. Roe, of Brownstown was reportedly fleeing the burglary in the 1600 block of North 1550th Street in Brownstown in a truck he’d stolen from the victim’s home after setting the home on fire.

Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies reportedly located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit that was joined by a Farina Police officer who utilized a PIT maneuver that brought the fleeing truck to a stop near St. Elmo.

At that point, law enforcement approached the truck and the Farina officer discharged his weapon striking Roe.

No law enforcement was injured in the incident. Roe was taken to an area hospital for treatment and was booked into the Fayette County Jail upon his release.

Brownstown Elementary School identified the victim as retired teacher Sandra Stine who is now a substitute teacher. The school states Miss Stine’s home suffered serious damage and she lost a pet in the fire allegedly set by Roe.

A bank account is being set up at the First National Bank of Brownstown to assist Miss Stine with her losses.

Roe was in Fayette County Court earlier this month in a 2022 case accusing him of burglary to the Cabin liquor store and gaming parlor in Brownstown on July 31, 2022. He was due back in court for a January 23rd pretrial hearing in that earlier case.
