FAYETTE COUNTY — Illinois State Police has released the victim of a fatal shooting Saturday night in St. Peter as a 14-year-old boy from Salem.

According to reports, the Fayette County Coroner pronounced Dakota Caige Branch dead at the scene in the 700 block of North 2200 Street in St. Peter.

Dakota was an eighth-grade student at Franklin Park Middle School in Salem. His funeral services are pending at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem.

A teen suspect reportedly fled the scene but was later apprehended.

A GoFundMe account has been started to help raise money for Dakota’s funeral expenses.  

The page has a goal to raise $10,000 for funeral expenses.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday in Sptringfield. ISP is handiling the investigation that it says is open and ongoing.
