(IRN) METROPOLIS, Ill. — A Metropolis man who was killed during World War II has now been officially accounted for.

Sgt. William Leukering was 28 years old when his B-17 bomber was struck by German aircraft fire in 1944 and went down.

The crash site wasn’t discovered until 2012 and last year, scientists used DNA analysis to positively identify the remains as belonging to Leukering.

His family plans to bury his remains in Round Knob.
